Race #4 was not able to be hosted by the scheduled club and Chairman Rich sent out a call for help.
San Leandro YC responded. The tides at San Leandro were not convenient but SLYC went anyway, having
to leave in the morning
very early to ensure getting to the start line on time. Vessel Double Dharma
was the hosting race committee boat. Skippered by Staff
Commodore Dale Snearly, assisted by Power
Fleet Captain Dena Snearly, Commodore Dan Williams and Sail Fleet Captain Tony Padilla.
There were 4 boats that showed up to race; Vita e Bella and Sweet Grapes in division A and Hot Ice
and Sparky in division B.
The wind was blowing between 7 an 15 knots most of the morning from the
west and NW. Fog had burnt off about 10:00 and it
looked as a great day for a race. The RC had to
reposition themselves at the start line as the wind switched to a NW direction at
about 7-10 kts.
Everyone was a bit late on the start due to an incoming flood that was going to be there all race.
The course the RC
gave was SLYC #4 going Z-3s-1s-As-Z of 11.0 NM. Division A headed north while
Hot Ice went on a starboard tack after going
through the start line heading SW with the current.
Soon after all boats headed toward San Bruno channel hoping for building wind.
As the fickle wind God’s on the bay decided that once over by San Bruno, the fleet was going to hit a hole and have
to fight the
incoming flood with light air. This was going to challenge the fleet.
At about 2:15 with the fleet still fighting the hole between SB 3 an 1,
the RC decided to shorten
the course to eliminate SLYC club marker A from the race and finish after SB #1 back to Z (finish line).
About 10 minutes later the wind picked up from the variable NW 5-7 kts to a steady 15 kts from the
west with gusts over 20.
Soon after, Sweet Grapes call in with-drawing from the race.
After the turn at marker #1, boats got a great ride of a broad reach and incoming flood.
We could
see many of them surfing in. It was great fun to watch the boats fly downwind through the finish
line. Hot Ice came in at 3:51:19
allowing the rest of the other boat in her division an extra 30
minutes to finish before getting a DNF. It was needed. Sparky came in at 4:33:24
just barely
beating the DNF. As it turns out Sparky with her handicap ended up winning division B.
Vita e Bella came in at 4:11:38
but since the extra 30 minutes is Division specific as
per SBYRA SRI Article #6 She must be awarded a DNF.
Thank you racers.
The RC realizes with the wind and tide conditions, that it was a frustrating
race with the winds dying when you need them the most.
But the ride to the finish line looked
fantastic.
Also as a note, the SLYC will not be able to host the Sept. 5 race. Please, see if you are
available to host and contact chairman Rich
(even if it might be another date in September).
By the way, you are all invited to join SLYC in their Invitational Regatta on Sept. 12th
at 11:30
for the “tour of the South Bay” regatta. Please see our Website SanLeandro-YC.org.
Also in August,
the San Leandro channel is to be dredged. YEAH!!!
